Be happy because this year, Healthcare Information Management (HIM) Congress presents a job exhibit where medical students, graduate nurses and medical practitioners are invited to explore various and rich job opportunities that the HIM outsourcing industry has to offer. There are 95,000 of nursing graduates every year and only less than 50% passed the board exam. 15% of them are working in call centers, according to Commissioner Monchito Ibrahim, Information and Communications Technology Organization, during the media and press presentation of Healthcare Information Management Outsourcing Services Congress 2011 (HIMOSC 2011) slated on September 15, 2011 at the New World Makati City Hotel with the theme, “Driving Sustainable and Dynamic Business Growth in the Philippines through Education and Innovation.”

Healthcare Information Management Outsourcing Association of the Philippines (HIMOAP) formerly known as the Medical Transcription Industry Association of the Philippines, Inc. (MTIAPI) is a non-stock, non-profit industry organization recognized by the Philippine government and BPO industry. The association was first registered as MTIAPI with the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission on October 16, 2003 and renamed as HIMOAP last August 2010. HIMOAP changed it’s name to a more diversified and aims to create more opportunities.

The Healthcare Information Management Outsourcing Services Congress 2011 event is co-presented by Globe Business and sponsored by MediCall, SMART Communications, DataOne Asia, SPi Global, United Health Group Information Services Pvt. Ltd., Slimmer’s World International and Maxicare.

The country’s capability in providing workers particularly in medical transcription alone is now getting a significant attention from the US market as they are currently undergoing a major healthcare reformation.”

Reyes adds, “We wish to discuss more what the HIM industry offers to investors, current HIM players and job seekers, and present what the industry can do to improve this industry. HIMOAP conducted seminars focusing on their expertise and highlighting the how-to’s in setting up a medical transcription business in the Philippines among which is the seminar dubbed as “Laying the Basic Foundation of a Complicated Outsourcing Business” in January 2007.

The association also held joint events with its partners and other outsourcing companies like the e-services 2004 Exhibition and Conference and Business Processing Association of the Philippines’ second International Outsourcing Summit in 2010.

In a lucid vista of the Philippine HIM workers, the medical transcription (MT) personnel in the Philippines range from 20 to 35 years old. On the average, each Filipino medical transcriptionist can transcribe 500 lines per day, some up to 1,000 lines per day with 98 to 99 percent accuracy rate. Even better, most of the Filipino transcriptionists have medical backgrounds due to surplus of nurses in the country as it boomed a few years ago. It is estimated that 50 percent of Filipino MT professionals are physical therapy graduates, 40 percent are nursing graduates, and the rest are from allied sciences.

Current health reforms and electronic medical records implementation in the United States are creating more career opportunities for Filipino nurses and medical practitioners as more and more functions are outsourced in the revenue cycle management involving specialized skills in healthcare both on the provider and payer sides T is just one among the many opportunities in the HIM sector.
