Banking Giant BDO and Huawei Collaborate to Provide Inclusive Financial Services for Filipinos

More than 50 million citizens — over half the population — do not use any form of online banking.

The average person in the Philippines spends more time on the Internet than any other country in the world. Filipinos are online over 11 hours each day, compared to a global average of just six hours. Indeed, with a total population of more than 100 million, 71% of Filipinos are active Internet users, creating the perfect environment to develop the country’s digital economy through Financial Technology (also known as FinTech).

Despite being the most active online, more than 50 million Filipinos — over half the population — do not use any form of online banking. According to an official government report published in 2019, only 8% of Filipino adults have an active online account. This, combined with the 97% of Filipinos who still trade in cash, has created increased risks during the global pandemic when in-person interactions are limited.

Technology for good - Fundraising goes social

In the new normal, doing good is much more digital.

In this time of COVID, many millennials are showing their support for the country’s health workers by using social media to raise funds for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as face masks, face shields and hazmat suits.

A eureka moment

Last March, five friends in Quezon City got together in a eureka moment to start a PPE fund drive for the country’s frontline healthcare workers. With the help of friends, families and kind strangers, they have raised over P3.2 million as of April 28, 2020.

Learning @ Home with Girls4Tech™ Connect: Mastercard Provides Free Online STEM Lessons to Children, Teachers and Parents

Mastercard extended access to its signature STEM curriculum, Girls4Tech™, through a suite of new online, creative educational resources. The program has been designed to help parents and teachers engage and inspire kids, ages 8-12.

Through the newly launched website Girls4Tech Connect, as well as through activities made in collaboration with our education partner Scholastic, teachers and parents can download lessons to help students learn about STEM topics, from the comfort of their homes or anywhere around the world.

These activities are built on global science and math standards – and incorporate Mastercard’s deep expertise in payments technology and innovation – to enable children to discover a range of STEM careers, such as Fraud Detective, Data Scientist and Software Engineer.

Now in its sixth year, Girls4Tech has engaged more than 800,000 students across the globe through inquiry-based activities and real-world challenges, all with the goal of inspiring more girls to pursue STEM careers and reduce the gender gap in these fields.

“We know that these are challenging times for parents and teachers on many fronts and hope that these learning resources are a fun way to engage and inspire kids about STEM while at home,” says Susan Warner, vice president of Community Engagement at Mastercard, and founder of Girls4Tech. “The easy access to the website enhances what we’ve done in so many workshops. We look forward to building on both efforts when it’s once again safe to gather in person.”

Beginning this week, new activities will be posted on a weekly basis at the Girls4Tech website, Facebook page and Twitter handle. Lessons are currently available in English, with additional Spanish and Chinese language content to follow in the coming weeks.

While all lessons are designed for students to work independently, materials are also available for teachers to guide online sessions.

These scenes may soon be reality as the automation technology is gradually revolutionizing healthcare through to the era of ‘smart healthcare’.

The concept of smart healthcare diverges from traditional approaches to healthcare; instituting intelligent and intuitive systems that improve the quality of patient care. #GirlPowerinTech: ILO-organized forum proves that #WomenCanDoIT

Women face a lot of challenges in the workplace, more so if that woman is in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (or STEM).  Traditionally, STEM sectors are dominated by men but through the years, and with the advancement of technology, it is now ripe for women to be part of it not only as employees but as decision-makers, as well.

This will be proven by the International Labour Organization (ILO) as it organizes a forum which will gather four women leaders along with a number of relevant public and private stakeholders in STEM sectors.  The forum, a few days before the International Women's Month, also marks the United Nations International Day of Women and Girls in STEM.  It is organized by the ILO Women in STEM Workforce Readiness and Development Programme with the support of J.P. Morgan and in cooperation with the Embassy of the United States in the Philippines and American Spaces-Philippines.

Teaching Teachers through Technology

Today’s generation grew up in the age of technology that it has become a natural tool for learning. While traditional methods equip students with the knowledge they need, the use of technology enables students to apply what they’ve learned in a real-world setting. However, more than how technology has transformed learning, the bigger challenge is how educators today who are less tech-savvy than their students can maximize the potential of technology in the classroom.

99.99% Bacteria-Free Water In Your Condo

If you think the best way to have 99.99-percent bacteria-free purified drinking water in your condominium is to get them from water-refilling stations, think again.

That’s because there is a better way—one that doesn’t pose any inconvenience, safety and security issue; one that is effective, yet costs less; one that gives you the safe drinking water in no time.

The answer is the Torayvino’s compact faucet-mounted water purifier, an easy-to-use water filtration system that is so small it fits at the palm of your hand.  Yet, this system is so effective at eliminating bacteria that causes diseases such as amoebiasis, cholera, and diarrhea.  It is the market leader in Japan (66 percent).

iAcademy: Technology and Future Education

There was a time when college students actually carried books to school. To own a laptop was a privilege, tablets and smartphones were virtually nonexistent, and only the tech geeks were the ones perpetually connected online.

What a difference a decade makes.
These days, it would be a novelty to see a student scribbling notes on actual paper; everyone’s busy tapping on keyboards. You’d be hard pressed to see coeds without their phones in hand, listening to their iPods and poking around on their tablets. Everyone is plugged in, 24/7. Schools get that. And as a result, they are revamping the way technology is used to ensure that students maximize its potential for a better college and campus experience.

Electrolux Design Lab Theme 2012: Design Experience

Electrolux Design Lab’s 10th Anniversary challenge to international design students is tied to Electrolux professional heritage in a theme that stimulates all senses.

Electrolux Design Lab is a global annual design competition inviting students and recent graduates of industrial design to compete for a six-month paid internship and prize money by submitting ideas that develop the sensory experience of home appliances. This year the jury will also take special note of the aesthetic qualities of the concept and the way textures and surface materials have been used.

Brief: Design Experience

As demonstrated in the Cube by Electrolux, the world of professional cooking is all about the experience. It’s not about achieving the perfect inner temperature of a steak for the sake of science or performance. It’s about designing the best possible experience for your guests. The creative force behind the experience is the merger of intuitive and innovative appliances with the creativity of the chef and carefully selected high quality ingredients.

XSTIG: More About 3D Vizion

By Filipinos, For Filipinos: Proudly Pinoy Company Aims to Change Country’s Advertising Landscape

Filipinos have always been at the forefront of innovation. As it is in more developed countries that a life that can dedicate itself to the pursuit of knowledge for its sake can create such great invention, it is at the other end of the spectrum—a dire need to focus on day-to-day matters which the Philippines has found itself. Strangely enough, the difficulties that have plagued the country for so many years have made innovation a real survival act.
Following this tradition of Filipinos stumbling towards modernization in the process of seeking a better way of doing things, a budding company named 3D Vizion has come up with a ground-breaking technology that takes the best of high-definition 2D technology and the latest in 3D technology to come up with a platform that is set to change the way companies in the Philippines advertise—glasses-free 3D screens.

The company was founded on the premise of providing the best for Filipinos—by Filipinos.

“When we decided to pursue this, we had only one intention in mind—to come up with a company, that will revolutionize the way we do advertising here in the country—to provide our countrymen with the best available technology out there,” shares Katrina Bantug, President and CEO of 3D Vizion. “Myself, Mr. Mohan Kulkarni and DEMIKK Holdings, Inc., as represented by Ruben Tiu, came up with this idea of having a fully-operational Filipino company that offers world-class, first-class products and services.”
